186 – Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) (Permanent Residency)

Who it’s for

Skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer for permanent residence via:

  • Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) – often for 482/SID or legacy TSS holders after meeting work requirements with the nominating employer.
  • Direct Entry (DE) – where a skills assessment is usually needed.
  • Labour Agreement – where approved concessions apply (industry‑wide or company‑specific).
What’s new (2023–2025)
  • TRT access broadened (Nov 2023): Employers can now nominate most TSS holders across streams for TRT (subject to criteria).
  • Income settings aligned: From 7 Dec 2024, the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) applies to ENS nominations as part of larger income‑settings updates, with indexation again from 1 July 2025.
  • ANZSCO 2022 applies for 186 DE/ENS.
  • Labour agreements continue as a PR pathway with potential age/English concessions in targeted sectors (e.g., aged care).
